A US military aircraft that transported 104 Indian immigrants who had been deported from the United States arrived at Shri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport in Amritsar, when it should have landed in Delhi. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accused the Centre of purposely selecting Punjab in order to create a bad impression about the state. The PUNJAB AAP president is Aman Arora, and he said that the Centre has been acting unfairly towards Punjab, and he wanted an explanation. At the end of his statement, he asked, “Why did they have to bring the aircraft to Amritsar when most of the deportees were not even from Punjab?”
Out of the 104 deportees, 33 were from Haryana and Gujarat, 30 from Punjab, 3 from Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh each, and 2 from Chandigarh. The move has also been slammed by Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla who termed it as a humiliation for India and asked why a foreign military plane was used instead of a commercial flight.
“A disgrace and cannot be accepted!” Aujla posted the message on his social media account. “Why didn’t the plane land in Delhi?” He asked. “This is an insult to our people and sovereignty. The government must answer.” Owing to the fact that the deportees were handcuffed, Aujla said that the whole process was quite humiliating.
The US action has been taken before the Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to travel to Washington to meet with President Trump. It is the first time that 104 Indians have been deported as part of the crackdown on illegal immigrants by the Trump administration. As of now, the Centre has not commented on the increasing criticism that has been witnessed concerning the deportation and the selection of Amritsar as the plane’s destination.
